IPL 2021 Auction: Worry for Mumbai Indians as their star batsman SuryaKumar Yadav flops in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20: Suryakumar Yadav, one of the players Mumbai Indians will certainly retain in upcoming IPL 2021 auction, has started off poorly in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2021. The right-handed batsman, who had a splendid IPL campaign last year, was dismissed for just 7 runs in Mumbai’s opener against Delhi on January 11.

Delhi posted a mammoth total of 206 runs on board, thanks to a trailblazing knock from KKR’s Nitish Rana (74 of 37 balls). Chasing the total, the Suryakumar Yadav-led Mumbai side collapsed for a mere score of 130 runs. Alongside Kumar, youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal, who plays for Rajasthan Royals, also failed to mark as he was dismissed for a duck. However, RCB’s Shivam Dube fought alone with the bat but his 63 runs went in vain as Mumbai lost the match by a huge margin.

Notably, Yadav emerged as one of the brightest prospects from the Mumbai Indians’ squad last year with some fantastic performances with the bat. He played all 16 matches for his side and scored 480 runs at an average of 40.00. However, his rough start to the Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy will definitely raise questions about his form ahead of IPL 2021.

The Mumbai Indians will surely be hoping for their star batsman to regain his touch in the upcoming matches. It will be interesting to see if the 30-year-old gets back his rhythm or not.

Meanwhile, IPL 2021 mini-auction is likely to take place on February 11 ahead of the 14th edition of the tournament. According to IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, the eight participating teams have been given the deadline of January 20 to submit the names of their retained players.

MI’s Possible Retained players and Likely RTM choices

Rohit will be the first and obvious choice, having led them to a record four IPL triumphs. Though this season has been a bit scruffy, in terms of runs scored, his strike rate of 129. The 34-year-old still has a lot left in the tank.

Second on the list MI’s death overs specialist, Jasprit ‘Boom Boom’ Bumrah. In his 7th season in the IPL, Bumrah remains to be one of the deadliest bowlers in the cash-rich league, with his fiery yorkers. Also, he has bagged more than 15 wickets in each of the last three seasons, at an average under 25. His selection should be a no-brainer.

Swashbuckling all-rounder Hardik Pandya is the third and final contender. Despite not bowling a single bowl, having undergone a back surgery, his ability to churn out runs at any stage of the game by a sensational strike rate of 161.84- makes him an asset for MI. He should be easy picking for the final slot.
